I quickly ran out the other night to this abandoned schoolhouse when all the conditions happened to be just right! My friend and I hopped out of the car, and without even letting our eyes adjust, the Milky Way was glowing! It was a bit windy, but that helped keep the bugs off, and us photographers were cool and happy.

Colorado Ad Astra-
I have always dreamt of touching the stars. For me, astrophotography is my way of expanding beyond this earth. It can make us feel small, or we can relish our own part of the universe. We get to be a part of something so much larger than most of us can ever comprehend. It’s amazing to me that every night the universe is on display, and most of us sleep through the show.
Ad Astra is Latin for “to the stars”.

Delicate Arch is one of the most beautiful natural rock arches in Arches National Park. Standing tall into the heavens, the core of our galaxy passes through the center of the arch. After waiting out some rain and clouds, I was able to capture this moment.

A Hunter’s or Harvest Moon marks hunting season for summer-fattened animals like deer and fox. I had some fun shooting this over some trees, and I think it gives it a very eerie October feel.

Twisted-
After a long day in the fiery hot sun, the cool twilight air is a welcomed relief. For a few minutes the clouds are magically illuminated a glowing pink against a deep blue sky. Night is coming, but the sun is putting on a show as it fights the moon for a few extra moments to shine.

Long before the sun came up in Death Valley, I waited patiently collecting images of the stars. As we spin, the North Star keeps it’s place. A constant in our world, Polaris is actually two stars overlapping in light.

After a season of heavy rain and cloudy stormy nights, we finally had a clear night to shoot the Milky Way. A few photo friends and I jumped at the opportunity to run down to Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse just after sunset. With blankets, food, and tons of bugs, we waited for the Milky Way to illuminate the night sky.

Stonehenge is one of those places that has always been on my bucket list. Always seeing it in nat geo documentaries and learning about it in history classes made it one of those places I had to see. Finally seeing the ancient stones was moving. Being there makes me think how little we know about these organized rocks. It’s both fun and mesmerizing. It’s like taking your mind on an adventure through time.

Sunflower Heavens-
Photographing the sun and the Milky Way would normally be impossible. This sunflower field, however, provides the opportunity to bring a tiny bit of the sun to the night. With the amazing stars from the Milky Way lighting up the night sky, the earthy glow of millions of tiny suns ignites the imagination.

The Devils Heavens-
As the sun light fades into night, I am waiting for my moment. Others are all heading back to the parking lot to get some sleep, but with the Milky Way scheduled to make an appearance, I can’t really relax. I’m jealous of them after a long day of driving. The tall grass around my feet is damp and causes the air to feel quite chilly. As the last bit of glow from the sun gives way to star light, I am shooting away enjoying the view.

In Zion National Park, you are rarely alone anywhere. As one of the busiest parks, Zion is hustle and bustle 24 hours a day. After setting up for sunset as spectators and other photographers pack up and head back for the night, I’m out there in the dark waiting. I’m normally one of the last photographers, if not the last one, to leave a scene. I’m just not ready to give up on it: trying to see if it changes or I can get more out of it. Zion is definitely an amazing place where you can explore so much and enjoy many different and beautiful views. Photographing at night can have its challenges, but so often you are rewarded with amazing views and images as a result. Coming from a large city and not being able to see the stars at night makes capturing these images in some of the most beautiful locations in the country (and the world) that much more special for me.
